Home Grown | Atlanta, GA

The first feeling you get when you walk in to Home Grown in Atlanta, Georgia is: comfort. They even have a dish on the menu called ‘Comfy Chicken Biscuit’ that fills the tummy as much as it soothes the soul, and one of the servers revealed that there were at least 10 other menu items that had the same comforting effect. The local hotspot is owned by Lisa Spooner who was a former teacher, and Kevin Clark, a fine dining chef. The restaurant is open for breakfast all day and has a lunch and brunch menu. If you’re passing through, be sure to visit!

18th Annual Woodward Dream Cruise

This past August I had the opportunity to attend the Woodward Dream Cruise in Ferndale, Michigan. Not only does the Dream Cruise go through Ferndale, but it spans nearly a 15 mile stretch of Woodward Ave. Woodward is the main piece of roadway that takes you directly into the heart of Detroit.

The Dream Cruise was started in 1995 and has gone on every year since. It is officially only one day in length, but folks start rolling into town a few days before the festivities officially start. Cruisers can be seen parked along Woodward in various locations as well as cruising the strip. Spectators can pull up a lawn chair and enjoy the sights while also strolling up and down Woodward to taste the deliciousness of street vendor food or catch some live music.

The event draws nearly a million and a half people 40 THOUSAND cars! Here are just a small few of all that we saw during the 18th Annual Woodward Dream Cruise. www.woodwarddreamcruise.com

Graffiti… or Murals

When it comes to art, people are all over the map. Some people love it; others hate it. Many don’t understand it, maybe from lack of trying, but quite often because some of the stuff on gallery walls is just so bizarre and obscure that why would one even want to try? Regardless of whether you seek out art or not, it seems to find you in some form or another. Take graffiti, for example. Many people ignore it everyday. But take a closer look. Can it cross the line from vandalism to art? If so, when, and how? Should we only consider certain kinds of graffiti, like tagging, to be vandalism, while considering other kinds of it to be works of passion and skill? Where does one draw the line, or should we even try?

Living with Wolves

I have been privileged enough to follow one of my greatest dreams, one as a child I thought was near impossible: to work with these amazing creatures. The last few years I have been spending time with, photographing and learning about wolves and wolfdogs…and not to mention having the chance to meet so many people in this community. So many opportunities have come my way and I feel so blessed.

Wolf/dog crosses certainly should not be in the hands of everyone; but I have felt ready to take the step of bringing one into my home. They certainly do not have the best reputation in society (mostly from individuals who have never even laid hands on one of these animals, believing myth and folklore), but for those who know what they are getting into and are properly educated, it is a relationship that can be extremely rewarding. I found the perfect match in Lucian…an adoptable boy in need of a home…not in a zoo or sanctuary with minimal contact. He needed a family. A place to belong. And he was brought to me by some very dedicated rescuers all the way from Texas. I am excited about how much I will learn from my new companion, and in turn I hope I can do him and his kind justice by educating those willing to learn more about one of the most hated animals in human history.

The Murals of Daegu

A few months ago, I moved to a part of Daegu, South Korea that’s surrounded by three American military bases. I had mixed feelings about living in this area. On one hand, there would be lots of Americans and other westerners roaming around. On the other, I would have to look at the concrete, barb-wired walls of the bases on a daily basis.

Once the chaos of moving settled and I was able to notice my surroundings, I realized that the cold, concrete walls weren’t always so bad at all, thanks to the work of some local artists.

After noticing the mural painted on the wall of the military base, I started noticing more and more of them throughout the city. I couldn’t believe how many murals I saw. They’re under bridges, on the roadways, in back alleys, near hospitals and schools- they’re everywhere. Throughout my next few posts, I’m going to share with you the murals of Daegu. Some are tucked away, visible to people who happen to glance down an alley in passing, only to be surprised by a work of art. Others were done illegally, possibly under the cover of night or even blatantly, during the day. And yet others are so big and obvious that they’re often missed by motorists and passersby. So far, the experience has reminded me that it’s good to slow down, take a moment, and look around. You may be surprised at what you can see.

The Old English ‘D’

You may have seen it at some point. Adhered to the back of someone’s car, on ESPN representing the Tigers, or maybe you have one of your own. It’s the Old English D. For many it’s just a logo, but for others, it has meaning.

The D represents a lot of history, turmoil, and perseverance. When you see the D you may think of corruption, gangs, abandoned and burnt down homes, drugs, or stray dogs. A mother may see the D and think of her child, and whether or not she or he will make it home from school. Others may see the D and think of the comeback of the Auto Industry, importing jobs to the city, Eastern Market, Woodward Avenue, Art Deco, or home.

In a city near the brink of ruins, there are people and businesses fighting for the survival and the comeback of the D. There is so much pride and opportunity behind that Old English letter. This is my introduction to one of many stories that will promote this beautiful city and the surrounding areas of the one and only, Detroit.
